Postbiotics: The Next Frontier in Gut Health Innovation

23 - Apr - 2026

Gut health innovation moved into a new phase of maturity in 2025. No longer solely driven by live microbial counts or broad probiotic positioning, brands and manufacturers are now relying on more precise ingredient classes such as postbiotics, structured fibers, standardized fermentates, and defined metabolites.

The 2025 SupplySide Global ingredient trade show marked a significant milestone—postbiotics truly arrived as a mature, marketable category. Consumer interest is rising fast, especially when postbiotics are clearly defined and positioned in contrast to traditional probiotics. ADM surveyed over 1,000 consumers and found that 80% said they were more likely to try a postbiotic than a probiotic once explained.

Postbiotics: The Next Frontier in Gut Health Innovation

Unlike probiotics that must remain alive to be effective, postbiotics are heat-treated inactivated probiotic organisms that retain sufficient metabolites to provide beneficial effects. This makes them suitable for ultra-heat-treated (UHT) products such as shelf-stable protein shakes and beverages, as well as “candified” formats.

South Korean firm HealthBiome Inc’s proprietary postbiotic ingredient has obtained regulatory validation both domestically and in the US, enabling premiumization across B2B and B2C markets. According to Nordic Rebalance’s head of R&D, “It’s a different way of looking at gut health. It’s not about who is there, it’s about what they are doing and what they are producing.”
